Intent

Sociology prepares students to understand the world we live in and how are lives are shaped. Students learn about family, education, crime and society but crucially they are taught to think critically about the ways they have been interpreted. Sociology builds awareness and tolerance because effective Sociologists requires respect and empathy. In our lessons we not only study diversity in society, but also celebrate it.

“The function of sociology, as of every science, is to reveal that which is hidden” – Pierre Bourdieu

Sociology teaches valuable skills including the ability to analyse, organise and communicate arguments from different points of view. Students are not merely concerned with what Sociologists know, but they will learn to evaluate the methods chosen to investigate and research a topic. It encourages critical thinking skills as well as literacy and oracy.
