The over-riding aim of the History curriculum is to allow all students to understand ‘how we got to now’ and develop a shared understanding of the world around them. We strive to allow students to develop a fascination for the past, but at the same time enabling them to develop a greater understanding of our present. History at Our Lady’s invites pupils to engage in and investigate the complexities of human nature, its impact and the circumstances through the darkest and the most triumphant periods in local, regional, British and World History.
“To build a future you have to know the past” – Otto Frank.
The History curriculum at Our Lady’s allows our students to ask and investigate questions to help them understand the past and the present. In an ever-changing world, our students are equipped to learn lessons from the past and ensure that as citizens we do not make the same mistakes as those before us may have done.
During their five years at Our Lady’s we want our students to develop skills which will be invaluable in their future lives. By examining different views of the past, students are taught to think critically, make judgements and express their ideas coherently verbally on paper. Alongside these fundamental skills we provide a curriculum which is broad and engaging; allowing students to gain understanding of a diverse range of peoples and their lives through the past.
