Intent

At Our Lady’s Catholic High School, the intent of our GCSE Edexcel Business curriculum is to develop students’ understanding of the dynamic world of business, fostering analytical and critical thinking skills essential for their future careers and personal lives. We aim to equip students with a comprehensive knowledge of business concepts, theories, and practices, while emphasizing ethical decision-making in alignment with our Catholic values.

Successful entrepreneurs know that the best way to predict the future is to create it.” — Peter Drucker

Our curriculum is designed to inspire and engage students by providing real-world contexts and practical applications of business principles. Through a blend of theoretical study and practical activities, students will explore topics across two key themes, interleaving knowledge to build a robust understanding over time. In Theme 1: Investigating Small Business, students cover enterprise and entrepreneurship, spotting a business opportunity, putting a business idea into practice, making the business effective, and understanding external influences on business. Theme 2: Building a Business delves into growing the business, making marketing decisions, making operational decisions, making financial decisions, and making human resource decisions.

We emphasize the importance of ethical leadership and corporate social responsibility, encouraging students to consider the broader impact of business decisions on society and the environment. Many of our pupils continue their business education at Level 3, pursuing A-levels, BTECs, or T-level pathways at local colleges in Preston. This progression underscores our commitment to providing a strong foundation in business studies, ensuring students are well-prepared for advanced study and career opportunities.

By fostering a collaborative learning environment, we aim to develop confident, articulate, and resilient individuals who can navigate the complexities of the business world. Our curriculum supports the development of essential skills such as communication, problem-solving, and teamwork, preparing students for further education and future careers. Ultimately, we aspire to nurture informed and responsible citizens who contribute positively to their communities and the global economy.
