The Art and Design curriculum at OLCHS empowers pupils to think critically, express themselves authentically, and engage with the world creatively. In offering a comprehensive curriculum of diverse activities, we aim to cultivate a generation of young people who will shape the future with their imagination and innovation.
“Life is art. Art is life. I never separate it.” – Ai Weiwei.
We promote life skills that shapes them into citizens of the future; curiosity, problem solving, adaptability, independence and resilience are embedded within our exciting and challenging curriculum. The foundations of art through the teaching of the formal elements are laid throughout KS3, these are revisited and built upon, in order to tackle increasingly challenging concepts. As each step in a learning journey develops, it incorporates a deeper understanding of prior learning, which leads to the independence and creative confidence required for GCSE.
Project work is underpinned with contextual studies, relating work to artists, craft persons, designers and links with other cultures across time and place. Visits to galleries and workshops with practising artists, bring our curriculum to life. We encourage pupils to discuss and debate their own and others’ work, extending our pupils’ creative vocabulary. Art at OLCHS encourages self-expression and creativity, building confidence as well as a sense of individual identity.
